What is slippery elm?
Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a tree that is native to North America.
It can be used to heal both dogs and cats from a number of ailments. Slippery elm contains tannins which is an anti inflammatory substance which calms and coats the lining of mucous membranes.
What can slippery elm be used for ?
-Gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea, ulcers, colitis, gastroenteritis, and irritable bowel disease.
-Respiratory issues like a sore throat and cough from conditions like a collapsed trachea, kennel cough, bronchitis, or acid reflux.
-Skin irritation from minor wounds, burns, ulcers, and hot spots.
-Anti-inflammatory properties: reduces inflammation within the body such as arthritis and joint issues & also kidney diseases.
How to prepare slippery elm.
With gastrointestinal issues, it is recommended to give your dog slippery elm 30 to 60 minutes before, immediately with, or right after meals. Upper gastrointestinal ailments will respond better if this herb is ingested before meals.
As slippery elm is high in fibre it can relief constipation, It is recommended to administer slippery elm for constipation either with or right after eating their food.
It is best absorbed when mixing in water. If feeding raw, you may mix the respective dosage in with the food and leave for a minute to absorb the moisture before feeding. Alternatively you may mix with some water and feed via a syringe.
Dosage.
It is recommended to feed 1/4 teaspoon per 5 kgs of body weight per day.
